Dissertation project
“Geographies of border-making at the South Sudan/Uganda border: tracing the travels of international bordering technologies”
Drawing on border studies in Political Geography, borderlands research in Africa and approaches to the geographies of policy mobility, this project analyses border-making in post-independence South Sudan. It explores the interplay of travelling bordering technologies – border management-related expertise, models, policy concepts, discourses, material techniques and infrastructures mobilised within international agendas –, the bordering practices of the South Sudanese state and its agents, and people’s experiences of everyday border crossing in the South Sudan/Uganda borderland. It asks how travelling bordering technologies are materialized, (re-)assembled and translated in the daily management of trade and migration in the newly independent state. Through empirical research among international organisations, state institutions and along the South Sudan/Uganda border, the project highlights how global circulations are made through the local. Through a grounded geopolitical account of international border management interventions, sovereignty production and the postcolonial state in this context, it contributes towards a more ‚international’ perspective on the contemporary remaking of borders, both empirically and theoretically.
