Dissertationsprojekt

The economic crisis which particularly affected the southern tier of EU countries since 2008 set in motion various new migration trends, some of which echoed past migratory routes. In the case of Portugal, post-crisis migrations have been in two directions: northwards to more prosperous European countries, and southwards to former colonies in Africa, notably the oil-producing state of Angola. This dissertation seeks to respond the following questions:

  • How can recent Portuguese migration to Angola be “explained”?
  • What are the distinctive characteristics of this new migration flows?
  • Sub- questions
  • What theoretical perspectives help to understand Portuguese migration to Angola?
  • What are the details and dynamics at play in this migration (Historical, political, economic, cultural, economic, institution, spatial- temporal etc?
  • What is the relationship between the realities of Portuguese employment in Angola and discourses and myths about Portuguese and Angolans?
  • Does being a Portuguese migrant in Angola have an advantage for employment?
  • What is the role of skill in this migration? How are skill and unskilled Portuguese able to obtain employment in Angola labour market?
  • How are Angolan nationals responding to the presence of Portuguese migrants in Angola?
